As an IT services company, our business does not involve activities with a directly negative impact on the environment. Even still, in keeping with the start of our environmental management efforts, we established environmental standards throughout the company with regards to the daily usage of electricity, paper, waste, and gasoline for company vehicles. We have also continued to refine the minimum standards for each corresponding to the actual factors at each of our work sites. Beginning in 2006, we abolished fixed standard values in favor of a policy of continuously reducing usage to the lowest possible levels.

Environmental management activity promotion organization
The Environmental Management System (EMS) is a management method intended to continuously reduce environmental impact (negative impact on the environment). In keeping with
our slogan “The Earth is an Irreplaceable Resource―It is Our Responsibility to Protect It”, Hitachi Information Systems considers the realization of a sustainable society as being one of the top concerns of our management.
Hitachi Information Systems promotes environmental activities by building environmental management systems in accordance with ISO 14001 and based on the achievements of a “General movement”.
We have the EMS Operation Organization (a total 116 sections in the whole company), main Divisions at each of our 29 offices at 8 business bases throughout the country, all with persons in charge and promotion administrators, and are implementing continuous improvement through the P-D-C-A cycle.
Acquiring ISO14001 certification
The Head Office acquired ISO14001 certification in December 1998 (the second in the information service industry in Japan, the first in the industry to be certified by the Japan Audit and Certification Organization for Environment and Quality (JACO), the certifying body).
In December, 2000, it was expanded to all offices, and in November 2005 we got approval for switchover to ISO14001: 2004 version.
The Hitachi Group, in order to unify and manage environment activities, built an environmental management system with the Hitachi Group Environment Promotion Organization, obtaining ISO14001 (September 2006), with environment promotion departments at the environment headquarters in Hitachi, Ltd., in 6 business groups, at headquarters, and in 18 companies which make up the core.
Hitachi Information Systems also takes part in this activity as a Group company.
Environmental internal audit
As the certification range expands to the whole company, so far a total of 60 environmental auditors have been registered in the whole company.
We implemented the first audit in 1998 and have been audited regularly every year since then.
In August 2001, we fostered one CEAR* registered assistant environmental management system auditor then, from 2002, we introduced a mechanism for mutual auditing through auditors who belong to other businesses in the company.
Auditors used only to be allowed to audit the business offices to which they belonged.
We aim for “Auditing which is severer than audits done by bodies outside the company”, by raising the level of audit contents every year and through the equalization of the assessment judgments by auditors from business offices throughout the whole country, and using them to further enhance the environmental management system.

Environmental education
Hitachi Information Systems, to effectively promote environment activities, considers environmental education for the employees and environmental audits essential, and is putting special effort into their implementation.
Understanding of an environmental protection cost
Hitachi Information Systems has been working out an environmental protection cost for all office from 2001, in order to understand what the results of activities are for one year.
In recent years, we are putting more emphasis on initiatives such as getting information across to society concerning our environmental activities, and signing up for, and contributing to environmental protection organizations.
Exceeding 10,000 data centers nationally, and initiating activities related to the “Environmental data center concept”
Hitachi Information Systems provides, through data centers around the country, housing services, hosting services, ASP services, remotely managed services, application operation services, and other services, to a wide range of businesses-finance, logistics, manufacturing, local government etc., whilst striving to improve operation procedures for customers.
In order to improve competitiveness of data centers still further, and with the outsourcing business as the core business, the number of operating servers at the data centers exceeded 10,000 in February 2007.
We can justifiably claim that a goal has been achieved one year ahead of plan, and that we have moved closer to the “Pooling concept” in the Medium-Term Management Plan.
We, considering environmental load at the data centers concurrently, set about the “Environmental data center concept” which is an energy-saving measures.
We are also aiming to reduce total power consumption by data centers by 30% in FY2010.
Reduction in Paper Usage
In order to protect forest resources and prevent global warming, we have established a set amount of A4 copy paper to be used per month at each of our work sites, so as to curb unnecessary usage of paper resources.

Reduction of Energy Usage
In order to combat global warming and the depletion of natural resources such as oil, we have instituted a policy of reducing unnecessary usage of electricity.
